Cross Armour Ring

Here’s something you may not know about me: I don’t have a middle name. It’s true. The older I get, the more people I’ve met in my life who have lived normal, functioning lives without middle names. But as a kid, it felt like I was the only person IN THE UNIVERSE who didn’t have one. There came a point where I considered lying just so I wouldn’t be such an outcast.

Kid: What’s your middle name?

Me: Samantha.

One week later

Kid: What’s your middle name again?

Me: Uh… it’s Jessica.

Kid: I thought you said it was Samantha.

Me: Gotta go!

During standardized tests, I would bubble in my first and last names, but leave all the bubbles blank where it asked for a middle initial. By high school, a lot of our electronic tests already had our names on them, so rather than filling in the bubbles, all you had to do was double check your name and other important identifying data. Then one day, during my sophomore year of high school, we had to take a standardized test in my Chemistry class, and when I got my answer sheet, somehow there was an ‘X’ bubbled in for my middle initial. At first I ignored it thinking it was an ‘X’ like, this person doesn’t have a middle name, but soon I realized that someone, somewhere, somehow substituted my lack of middle name with an actual ‘X,’ like my middle name was something that started with an ‘X.’ This went on for years, to a point where a lot of my friends in school started addressing notes, birthday cards and letters to Sab X. To this day, The Boss has my number in his cell phone under “Sabrina X.”

I didn’t mind having an ‘X’ for my middle name. In fact, I liked it until someone pointed out that my initials were now SXE. SAY THAT OUTLOUD. Also, by the time I started applying to jobs my senior year of college, it occurred to me that I probably couldn’t have a “fake initial” on my tax forms. Eventually, I made the change, but Sabrina X will always have a special place in my heart. Fast forward several years to a few days ago when I saw this Cross Armour Ring on line. It was love at first sight, and reminded me of the days when the made-up initial between my first and last names gave me a place to belong.

I love the current, yet vintage vibe of this ring, and how the coloring is such a subtle gold. It’s so neutral, it can go with most anything.

Hair on knuckles = Indian genes. DON’T JUDGE ME.

Just for the record, Cross Armour Ring is the actual spelling. If I had any say in it, I would have spelled it PROPERLY: Without the ‘U’. We ‘Mericans don’t run ’round all helter-skelter just addin’ letters ta words. IT’S NOT THE AMERICAN WAY!

LOL – my brother also has no middle name and his made up second name for the duration of his childhood was Sam :) The adding of the u made me laugh – I’m from South Africa and we also add U’s to everything.

    1. Totally been there. At my first co-op job in university, I got the “X”. I hated it… till I started my second co-op job, where someone in IT randomly put a “P” in place of my middle name. I used to try to come up with a different desi name starting with P for each day of my work term. Trust me, they’re NOT flattering (Parveen, anyone?)
    2. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH PUTTING A “u” IN EVERYTHING! DONT HATE ON THY CANADIAN NEIGHBOUR (YES, NOTE THE “u”)
    3. That is all. Happy New Year :)
