I’m starting this post with a long, dramatic, heartfelt sigh. You Guys, this is it. I just mailed our change of address forms at the post office, and when I handed my stuff to the clerk, I said, “It’s been really great coming to this post office,” and he goes, “What?” and I go, “This post office. It’s been really great coming here,” and he goes, “O…kay?” Maybe I should be embarrassed by my sudden emotional outburst, but I couldn’t help but think that I was at the post office I’ve been going to for the last year and half for possibly the last time ever. There are so many emotions going through my mind right now, I haven’t been able to process how lame I must have sounded, though I imagine when I tell The Boss what I said he’ll remind me that telling some Rando who works at the post office that I’m going to miss his workplace is definitely worthy of a good, hearty head-under-pillow burying.

The Boss had his promotion/goodbye party at work this morning with nearly 100 people in attendance, and in the course of less than one hour, I somehow managed to burn through five gigs on my memory cards and got the dreaded CARD FULL! message half-way into his speech. Lucky for us (and our families) someone else was armed with a video camera so I’m hopeful that they’ll share their footage. The morning’s festivities were really nice — a video farewell from The Boss’s co-workers, a speech from his boss with words so kind it was hard to accept they were being spoken about us, and a room packed with people who, when The Boss was done speaking, held their applause for so long, it was reminiscent of a crowd calling for an encore at an opera house. It was really moving to be a part of something so special, to reflect on The Boss’s hard work, and now prepare for the future. We know it’s not going to be an easy ride, but we’re all in, so now there’s no looking back.

The guy from Time Warner just walked in to SEVER MY CONNECTION TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD, and I’m motioning for The Boss to STALL HIM! He’s got our DVR/cable box and now he’s heading toward the modem, which means I won’t have Internet access until tomorrow night when we reach our first hotel in New Mexico, unless of course I find random hotspots on our drive from which I can blast a tweet, or 600. We’re leaving early in the morning so after The Boss and I get the last of our stuff into the car, we plan on spending a quiet night at home together for our final hoorah in L.A.

bff: So where are you going to live?

Me: A place called Hamden, it’s like 15 minutes outside of New Haven.

bff: HAMden? HA! Do they eat a lot of HAM there?

***

Later, on the phone with The Boss:

Me: What street do I turn on?

Him: Turn on Buckingham. HA! But don’t eat HAM.

And to think, I CHOSE BOTH OF THEM.

The Boss and I were talking the other day about why so many people seem to have no idea when the second Eid (Eid-al-Adha) comes around. It feels (to us) like everyone is surprised by its arrival even though it’s exactly two months and 10 days after Eid-ul-Fitr, which is the holiday marking the end of Ramadan, every year. Yet somehow this second holiday often seems overlooked. The Boss said it’s because the first Eid comes after Ramadan with so much anticipation, it’s impossible to miss. Muslims all over the world are fasting from sun up to sun down for 29 or 30 days so everyone is very aware of when the month ends and the holiday celebration begins.

Agreed, My Love.

I didn’t forget that today was a very special day, but I do realize that I am more active with the Eid-post-Ramadan. Because it’s the first of the two major holidays we celebrate, I do the gift guides, and I plan ahead with presents. I’ve been aware of the significance of the days leading up to today, but this year, after we went to the mosque in the morning for the Eid prayer, we came home, ate some cheese (obvi) got straight to packing, and then The Boss headed back to work since things have gotten really busy for him in the final weeks leading up to our move. It was still special, but this Eid often feels a little rushed, and that feeling was magnified for us this year.

But still, irrespective of what I have going on in my life, or how many people call someone to ask when this Eid is, it doesn’t change the importance of this special day, and the few days following it. I want to wish everyone who celebrates a very blessed and happy Eid. I hope you all have a wonderful week!
