A Letter

Dear February,

I don’t like you.

Everything about you is so bland, and unoriginal, and slow. Sure, you’re the owner of many birthdays belonging to people I love, but every one of your 28 days makes me feel like you’ve grabbed me by my ankles, and are dragging me through a pit of jagged pebbles filled with mice turds, binge eating, laziness, and boredom. Your weather is always out of whack, February, like the old cuckoo clock that’s still hanging on the wall in our basement even though it hasn’t worked since 1996.

I can’t remember a time in my life when I rejoiced over your arrival. You, and your fraternal twin, August have been the eggshell in my cake…the rock in my shoe…the hair in my gum…the eyelash in my eye…the extra pound on my scale, and I loathe your existence. You’re like an unattractive girl with a boring personality that happens to be carrying a nice handbag by a designer called Black History. I don’t think you deserve to carry that handbag, February. If I had it my way, November would be Black History Month. No-vem-ber. It sounds so distinguished, so full of life, and possibilities. You’re hardly even spelled right. You have an extra letter that no one uses, and days that add and subtract at will. What kind of game is that? Have you ever thought about the implications of a child that was born on February TWENTY-NINTH? Do you even know what kind of trauma and self-doubt you’ve embedded into their tiny little hearts? Never really knowing how old you are, never getting a birthday card postmarked on your actual birthday. Do you even care?

Everything about you drags on like a bad movie, or an irrelevant conversation with a mother-in-law. February, you suck all the energy out of me, and each day I wake up while you’re still around, I feel like I have to crawl through molasses just to get my day started. And no, that’s not because I was eating waffles in bed last night. Stop looking for a Scape Goat, February.

I looked at my calendar today and realized only nine days have passed since you bombarded my life with your awfulness. You’re the uninvited guest, the third wheel, the girl that flirts with another woman’s boyfriend, and I can’t wait for March to come around and month a big one all over your face.

Forever your enemy,
Sabrina

November is Native American History month but they don’t get attention. I don’t mind February but I want it to end so it gets warmer.

Jeepers! My birthday is in feb and so is my sister’s and my dad’s but I think none of that matters…February DOES suck!

February does sort of stink (except my husband’s birthday is in it, so it sort of makes it feel a little better…)
But why no love for AUGUST! That’s an awesome month! I always feel like the peak of summer is right around the beginning of August…and then it winds down slowly, and then you have the lovely Fall :)

I somewhat I agree on February, but November and August I totally disagree. November can be fun, but where I live at least it’s the beginning of the freefall in to a nasty, wet winter. August, on the other hand is hot and wonderful, like a big awesome hug every day. If I were to write this letter to a month, I think it would be January: it’s just too wintery to handle.

Thank you so much for your understanding comments on my blog. I’m glad to see others have experienced what recently happened to me.
I must say I love your powerful testimony of hating February- it totally cracked me up- I would say if there was a month a HATE it would have to be JANUARY- the start of a new year, the bad weather, can I just say -who has money in January… it’s either been spent on Christmas or is going to Credit cards to pay off Christmas- then you realize all the holiday parties have caught up to your waist line- so if you weren’t depressed before NOW you really are! HA HA HA! Thank you for sharing your honesty!
