Happy Birthday, Bing Bong

Yes, Bing Bong. Only one of the 1,204 nicknames I have for The Boss. You know, had I decided to call him that on this site in October 2008, the whole world would have known him as that instead of  “The Boss.” Like, I would have been telling you stories about my husband, Bing Bong.

I think it has a very sweet ring to it.

So, today is The Boss’s Bing Bong’s birthday, and since planning something on a weekday gets a little hectic, I made reservations to take him whale watching this passed Saturday in Newport Beach, but the week-long thunderstorms crept into the weekend, and derailed my plans.

When I was little, my family took a trip out to Cape Cod, Mass. to go whale watching, and we saw dozens of dolphins (they like to play in the waves that the boats make) and a mama blue whale and her baby. It was absolutely incredible. The tour guide told us to look for “footprints” on the water, and I was all, “AWW SNAP! We’re about to see Jesus, ya’ll!” but turns out it wasn’t him. It was the whales. Apparently, the rhythmic pattern in which whales move their giant bodies create “footprints” on the surface of the water.

Usually, moments after you spot a marking like this, a whale (or whales) will come to the surface. After our trip to Cape Cod, my sister and I spent the next three years trying to make “footprints” of our own. After our swim classes at the local community center we’d stay at the pool for an extra hour practicing. One of us would get in the water and thrash around like an epileptic mountain goat, while the other stood on the pool’s edge as a judge. Neither of us are entirely certain if we ever made a footprint, but that didn’t stop us from coming up for air every 12 seconds like,  “DID I DO IT? DID YOU SEE IT? I KNOW I HAD IT THAT TIME!”

With whale watching rescheduled, The Boss and I did dinner at Sushi Dan in Hollywood (which was fantastic) and swung into Pinkberry for dessert where I was all, “Sorry, Ice cream!” when we walked in, and then again when we left. I also did that about eight more times on our drive home.
I should probably learn the rest of the words to that song.

Since today is The Boss’s official birthday, and because we couldn’t go to the beach, I plan on slipping into a whale costume and flooding our living room. I’m pretty sure if I practice hard enough, I can get the surface of the water to read “Happy Birthday” by the time he gets home.

Sabrina, you always come up with thoughtful and imaginative gifts, but I think the gift of your beautiful smile and kind words should be more than enough!

Lyna, RE: NY, there are some really good halaal places to eat in NY. My favorite is actually in Queens, Kabul House (Afghani/Persian food). Then there’s Ali Baba’s on 34th St btw 2nd/3rd, though when I asked them, they said only their chicken isn’t halaal, but all their food is really good. I went to a place recently in harlem near 123rd and Amsterdam, formely Lyla’s now Elsa’s? They have really good burgers, and my chicken mozzarella was fantastic…Don’t think you will have a problem with hijab, there is such a big mix of people in NY and NY’ers at least are pretty used people from all over — actually, you might actually get hit on more than anything, so I’d watch out for that…yes, I’ve had random Egyptian man propose to me on the subway whilst wearing hijab. But you never know, I hope you don’t have any trouble!

“Man in the early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what I’m wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilization that man has achieved, and is not regressive. It’s the removal of clothes again that is regressive back to ancient times” - Nobel laureate, Tawakul Karman, in response to journalists who said her hijab was not proportionate with her level of intellect and education.
