We Have a Taker!

Since The Boss and I took turns being sick these past two weeks, we haven’t done any cooking, or cleaning. So last night, we ran to our favorite hole-in-the-wall Indian spot for take-out. And when I say we ran, I mean, we literally ran. The place closes at 9 p.m., and at 8:47 p.m. The Boss and I looked around at the unruly mess, saw the pile of dirty dishes, pots and pans, the enormous mountain of laundry on the bed, and then looked at each other. Within seconds, I jumped for the phone to call the Indian market, and when the guy said hello, I was all, “WE’LL BE RIGHT THERE!” (even though he didn’t ask) and then I threw the phone across the room (as to stress the urgency of the situation) and then we raced down the street on foot — me in my pajamas and a sweater, and The Boss in a sweat shirt and sweat pants trailing behind going, “Do you have the keys? Where’s my wallet? Are you sure they’ll be open? Does it help you run faster if you do that with your arms?”

The Boss and I clean once a week, but it’s rare that our place stays completely clean until the next Cleaning Day — and we can’t seem to understand why. There are ONLY TWO PEOPLE living here, yet somehow we manage to take out at least three bags of trash daily. Granted, we use one-gallon trashcans for our kitchen and bathroom, but still, three bags of trash a day? It’s as if we’ve taken on a challenge to see if we can produce enough waste to destroy the earth all by ourselves.

This morning, The Boss said we’d clean everything tonight when he got home, but I can’t stand this mess any longer. Also, who wants to clean at night? I thought maybe I’d tackle this mess alone, and that way The Boss would walk into a home that doesn’t smell like dirty feet covered in chutney, but this is at least a three-man job. Since we can’t afford a cleaning service (and because it might be a little faux-paux to hire a maid service for a studio apartment) I decided to start recruiting in the stock room today. I was all, “Who wants to help me clean my place today?” and everyone was all, “You’re lazy.” So, that didn’t go too well. But I’m no quitter, so I tried again later (after everyone had eaten) and this time we had a taker! One of the girls said she’d come over to help me, and before I left for the day, we finalized our cleaning strategy and went down a list of all the products we’d need. So far we’ve got our hands on bleach, trash bags, air freshener,  new sponges, a car vacuum, and cleaning cloths.

I’m excited to get this whole place disinfected and sparkling, before The Boss gets home, though after revisiting our supplies list, I’m not sure if we’re teaming up to clean my place, or trying to cover up a murder.

YOU GOT SOMEONE TO HELP YOU? I live in a studio, I can’t even get my siblings to help me :(

Wow! Cleaning help is awesome, although I’m super sensitive about people seeing my mess. Especially my older sister bc she used to clean hotel rooms and she is all about the details.

I spent my morning cleaning the downstairs. I really wish we lived in a smaller, one-story house so that I could clean the whole thing at once and it wouldn’t take as long. Arg. More land, less house. It’s ideal.

Sabrina, we also lived in a studio the first year of our marriage, and there is something about studios that’s more nasty than say, a one bedroom. I think, since there is less space to clutter, even a little clutter starts looking like a lot.
I had a few wicker baskets in one corner of my studio and anytime I didn’t have time to open the drawer (that was right next to the basket) and properly fold in the clothes, I’d toss them in the basket instead. So, even though there was a mess, it was a contained mess and much easier to sort and clean up later.
    Happy cleaning!

Apart from the flailing arms, this kinda stuck in my head:

“smell like dirty feet covered in chutney”

And it disturbed me, A LOT.

I CAN see what you’re doing with your arms and the answer is YES it does make you faster.

Don’t forget the Magic Erasers. Love those things.

That’s a coincidence, I spent all day cleaning my room and bathroom as well!

Aw! So sweet you got a helper. What reward/trap did you use to entice her?

Hahaha, I have the same problem.. I have to clean only one room, but still I cant manage to do it every weekend.

Before marriage I used to clean my room every saturday.. but nowadays I only sleep on saturday and rarely clean. Sometimes I just cant stand it anymore and start cleaning at night.

I got my focus now on the laundry, man! that pile keeps growing and everytime you think you have done a lot of laundry.. a whole new pile comes up again.

Speaking of laundry, I had to do last minute towels laundry today, with my sleeping child strapped to my back and even managed to have food for her when she woke up. Ok it was Papa Johns, but still. I had to drag a ton of laundry, groceries AND the box of pizza all the way up 3 stories AND be quiet enough to let my daughter sleep.

I, too, wonder how two people manage to have so much trash. Sometimes I get embarrassed making two trips to the trash bin in our apartment complex. Funny thing is when I lived with my parents, and there were four of us, we managed to have just 2 – 3 bags a week. I’m two weeks behind in cleaning. Yesterday I cleaned the bedroom and scrubbed the bathroom and today, it’s like that never happened. I’m determined to have at least 3/4 of the chores done or risk losing it ^_____^

LOL – my husband and I spend many a day asking ourselves how 2 people can manage to do so much damage to a very small 2 bedroom house with only 2 people living there!

“Man in the early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what I’m wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilization that man has achieved, and is not regressive. It’s the removal of clothes again that is regressive back to ancient times” - Nobel laureate, Tawakul Karman, in response to journalists who said her hijab was not proportionate with her level of intellect and education.
