Acceptance

The last time The Boss and I went to visit his parents was just before we moved to L.A. And while we were there, my mother-in-law, who is one of those people who always has gifts for everyone, gave me this.

I thought it was absolutely beautiful.
I love antique jewelry boxes.
The smaller the better.

It’s refreshing to see how these little in-family trinkets bring with them the perfect imperfections that come with age. Like the uneven tone of the wood.

How it sits slightly off-centered so there’s a little gap even when the lid is closed.
As I was admiring how perfect my new gift was she told me to open it.
So I did.

“This is was the first Eid gift [my husband] ever gave me,” she said. “Isn’t it beautiful?”

My father-in-law was doing his residency when my in-laws first got married. It was a few years before they were able to move out of their tiny apartment, and before they had any extra spending money. With the first real paycheck FIL got, he bought MIL this beautiful set for Eid, and now, she was giving it to me.

I didn’t think I could accept something that held such great sentimental value, but she insisted. The set also came with a matching pair of earrings that have to be slightly altered before I can wear them. Back then, it wasn’t uncommon for non-costume jewelry to have thick, and rugged posts.

There’s always an adjustment period when a mother watches her son get married, and naturally, I can’t understand that feeling now. But I do understand that the memories that come with these kinds of firsts in a marriage are worth far more than even the recipient of the gift will ever know. But I do hope that MIL knows that I cherish its sentiment — not only because it’s from her past, but because I recognize her silent gesture of acceptance of me, and in some ways, an offering of trust and friendship for our future together.

So sweet and sentimental! I’m so glad you’re blessed with such a wonderful family. :)

Do you watch Little Mosque on the Prairie, by any chance? Here in America we have to watch it online. Those Canadians are so spoiled. ;) Anyways, this post reminds me of JJ’s mom, giving Rayyan the wedding dress! (except her gift was more like a curse. haha ohh how I love that show!)

“Man in the early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what I’m wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilization that man has achieved, and is not regressive. It’s the removal of clothes again that is regressive back to ancient times” - Nobel laureate, Tawakul Karman, in response to journalists who said her hijab was not proportionate with her level of intellect and education.
