Thanksgiving Day: Chutney Included.

The Boss and I will spend Thanksgiving with just the two of us for the first time ever, and we decided a few weeks ago that we weren’t going to have traditional Turkey dinner — mostly because neither one of us knows how to make a turkey. A few days ago, I asked him if he was sure he didn’t want to do a traditional Thanksgiving, and he said he was sure. When we woke up this morning, he goes, “Wanna get a turkey?” and I was all, “Are you serious right now?” and he was like, “Yeah, we’ll do a dinner. I love Thanksgiving!”

Seriously?

Readers, let’s look at this from a logical perspective.
First, NO ONE HERE KNOWS HOW TO MAKE A TURKEY. And second, if we go to the halal store and buy a turkey now, we’re going to get stuck with a 16 pound turkey THAT NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO MAKE. So then he’s like, “What if we ask them to cut some of it off for us?” and I was like, “Okay, so who’s going to want the other half of a turkey?”

He thought about that one.

While  The Boss tried to conjure ways we could still pull off an elaborate Turkey dinner THE DAY OF THANKSGIVING, I started to tell him all about why I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving for its historical significance. I have a lot of issues with how American students learn history in elementary school because we’re all led to believe that the pilgrims and Indians were BFFs, and it wasn’t until I was much older, with a less ripe brain, that I learned and understood that time of barbaric, and unnecessary war in our country.
In our country. Right? I know. Man can be so selfish.

So I start telling him all about how history is so biased in every country, and people need to understand the true meaning of “holidays,” and he got all annoyed and was like, “IF YOU LIVE IN AMERICA YOU HAVE TO LOVE THANKSGIVING!” so I go, “Okay, I love you. Here, have Small Pox” and then he got all dramatic, and rolled over, and put a pillow over his head.

Then he sits up, and goes, “Should I make my Kheema?” (an Indian ground beef dish) which if you’ve been with me long enough, then you remember when The Boss tried to make me gain weight.
(Well, that’s not exactly how it happened, but it’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it.)

Since I do love Thanksgiving because of the food and the people (not for the rape and pillaging) I did want to do something special because we had a day off, and because I now have, in my possession, the recipe for The Pie. Also, today is the Day of “Arafah,” which is the day that all the people who went to Hajj are completing their pilgrimage, which means tomorrow is Eid-ul-Adha, so these next few days are significant for many reasons.

As of 11 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, The Boss and I have decided to have a really atypical Thanksgiving by making an Indian dinner tonight, and of course pie. We’re off to the Indian grocery store now to collect things we’ve never heard of (i.e. nigella seeds) and I hope everyone has a really safe, and happy holiday weekend.

I had keema for iftar tonight. The banana muffins failed miserably :( . I put 3.4 cups of sugar instead of the 3/4 of cup.

Yes, this girl over here never bakes!

    Happy Eid!

The whole bird is for professionals. I am a self-proclaimed decent cook and I wouldn’t go there. There’s not enough Food Network for me to try..yet.

If you start with a breast and practice that on a non-thanksgiving day, then kinda get your feet wet, you’d get the hang of it. Just remember to baste it or you’ll have a nice piece of meat that’s like chewy sawdust. Yum. :)

My family’s tradition is SPICY curry…when i was living in San Francisco, use to go to the annual thankstaking sunrise ceremony on Alcatraz island in remembrance of the resistance and struggle for self-determination for indigenous peoples of North America, as well as across the world…now that’s something to observer! But, i do like spending time with the fams and reflecting of what i do have in my life to be thankful for..Eid mubarak!
