I Won’t Sneeze on Your Kid

A few years ago, my cousin had a baby, and when my family went to visit, the first thing she said when we walked into the house was, “Can everyone please wash their hands? It’s flu season.”
At first, I was a little taken aback, and mildly offended considering I’m the cleanest person I know (after my dad) I constantly wash my hands, and I ALWAYS have two bottles of Purell on me at all times. But after washing my hands so I could hold the new baby, I realized that this mother had every right to tell anyone and everyone who was going to come within 10 feet of her baby to disinfect — after all, a newborn has such a delicate immune system, and babies are so very susceptible to sickness.
Now, whenever I go to someone’s house where there is an infant, or anyone younger than a toddler, I always wash my hands before I ask to hold the baby, or play with the kids. But that’s mostly only with infants. Like, if your kid is 5 or up, they’re already going to school, picking their nose, and playing with other children who are also dirty. So, if your kid goes to school, I probably won’t wash my hands before I play with them — and I probably wouldn’t feel too bad if I accidentally sneezed on them either.
I’m only (sort of) kidding.
What are you doing to stay healthy this season? Has anyone gotten the H1N1 vaccine? If you have kids, what precautions are you taking to ensure they don’t get sick?

Even after constant use of hand sanitizer & keeping away from ice cold drinks I ended up getting sick =(
Well, what can you do if the inconsiderate person sitting next to you in class coughs all over you…you can’t do anything about that sadly.
there’s like a mad amount of hand sanitizer on campus, so yeah, i use it. lol. woot.
im in NYC, so anytime i come home, i automatically wash my hands first thing i do.
im a little iffy on “anti-bacterial” stuff, i think over use can cause bacteria resistance, so if theres soap and hot water, i opt to use that instead, but i DO definitely carry sanitizer with me, for those times where there isnt a sink near by.
Sabrina off topic, but do you listen to music/watch movies?
I recently had a baby who was premature. Premature babies have a very weak immune system. So I have been super careful now. Everytime I come home I wash my hands, where as before I did not.
Well guess what? Somehow I got sick. It started with a sore throat with I killed by eating honey mixed with ginger powder several times a day. Then a cold with a slight fever started. I have been drinking lots of OJ and oranges and after 2 days I hope it goes away because I can’t take care of baby while I am sick and it’s hard cuz she seems to only love me
My point, you can do whatever you can to fight off germs. But in the end, if you go to the store and someone just sneezed and you were right there and inhaled or if you touched something someone else just touched and then rubbed your eyes or wiped your lips, you can still get sick even with all the sanitizer and hand washing you do
its scary out there right now and I don’t really think there is much you can do to fight it off.
I’m didn’t get my kids the flu or H1N1 vaccine. We are eating healthy, lots of greens and fruits, cut back on sugar as much as possible. Also gargling with salt water and using a neti pot really have helped.
I’ve found these blogs to be really helpful;

oops change that (I’m to I)
Hi Sarah. I don’t listen to music, but I do watch movies — just not scary ones;)
I didn’t get the vaccine, but I did get H1N1. Which was not fun.
(hey, that rhymed!)
I’m not overly worried about germs with my kids, and I don’t get them any of the optional vaccines (that includes flu ones)
I am however delaying my youngests 2 year well child checkup indefinitely (i’ll take him no later than his 3 year check up) because of the H1N1 and other general flu’s going around. He’s perfectly healthy and I’m not concerned about delaying vaccines so I’d rather stay out of germy Dr’s offices for now.
We definitely have hand sanitizer around when we have a newborn, but after a few months it’s just regular hand washing and once they are crawling (or playing around on the floor) I don’t worry much at all. Everyday germs helps the immune system and my kids are very rarely sick.
I wash my hands probably like 50 times a day (not only after H1N1 started, that has been my habit for years. It’s a compulsion, I guess…) and I carry hand desinfection with me. I will get the vaccination as well on December. Here in Finland, they have given vaccinations to risk groups first, and starting from December, the rest of the population will get it too. Although waiting in line for 3 hours to get vaccinated isn’t really appealing, but I do want to protect myself – and my near and dear ones – by getting vaccinated.
I’ve got a bad case of the common cold at the moment and it’s no fun… but I do wash my hands regularly and carry the hand sanitizer for the times when water and soap is not available… as I work with kids (primary teacher)I make sure that I actively wash my hands throughout the day as germs are everywhere.
But as you said in your video, there was one colleague of mine who, like yours would not was her hands after going to the bathroom, we’d both be in there on a number of occasions and she wouldn’t wash them, was weird for me as we worked very closely… It’s a hard one, but I agree people need to be told! I always ask my boys (in class) if they’ve washed their hands after visiting the bathroom and make a point when they haven’t.
I’ve definitely found myself washing my hands more at school, especially when you’re studying in the library and you can hear a person a few cubicles down like having those hacking coughs =/
And btw you are much nicer than me… I think I would’ve asked the lady to wash her hands before she shared my popcorn LOL!
Or maybe I would’ve just not shared it with anyone that day.
You and your super white teeth! *shakes fist*
what I always do wash hands for at least 20 seconds… use hand santizer.. eat healthy
off topic Umm Hend. your blog is AMAZING.. keep up good work!
Farah and Iman.. i concur–
i wash my hands constantly at work, even though i’m not in the health field or work with kids. no offense to the peeps i work with but i have been witness to we’ll say their “less than clean habits”.
you can never be too careful..plus i carry the wet ones wipes at all times, i drink my OJ everyday and take a vity.
i don’t plan on getting the H1N1 because i think healthy eating/habits will get me through…plus i’m super cheap….lol.
Off topic Reply, wow thanks so much zuzu!
