The Governement Knows Best

I had a few people ask questions about the Background and Identity poll that was posted yesterday, so The Boss and I took another look at it this morning, and realized that there had to be a better way to include everyone. The poll from yesterday was derived after doing a Google search looking for the best way to run a poll like this. I found that many Web sites were using a similar format, so it seemed like the most inclusive way to do it.

But then this morning, something clicked.

Hello! The U.S. government always does things the right way, so why didn’t I go to them first? You can thank the Department of Justice for helping me out with this one, and also Wikipedia, and also every job application I’ve filled out in the last 8 months.

Please vote, and if you already did so yesterday, please vote again because this poll is new, and everyone likes new things.

I’ll be back later, or as the young folk would say, LATAZ!
(I’m feeling mildly embarrassed right now.)

I’ve heard on these things Arab is considered “White” my kids are half white and half arab (Yemeni) and I always check white and other and write Arab <3

So would you click ‘white’ if you’re middle eastern? I’m Egyptian though. Would I click African then? Why did you get rid of the Middle Eastern option Sabrina?

I’m having a mild identity crisis here.

Arab / Middle Eastern would have been a good option! But I guess I’m African, seeing as I’m Algerian.. oh the complexity of categorising!

Legally, Middle Easterners are considered Caucasian. If you’re Arab, that’s what you’re supposed to check.

Sabrina – I would prefer having the ‘Middle Eastern’ option there. Life in America is not the same for Arabs as it is for whites/Europeans, and socially/culturally, they’re not considered white either.

I hate categories and I don’t see why we need them. Another institution of White bureaucrats way back when in order to control people and bring favoritism amongst themselves in my opinion. I said in MY opinion! So if I’m Arab I’m considered WHITE? The Arabs I know would not like that at all and would never consider themselves white! If I’m Indian and my relatives were forced to move to Pakistan ages ago, are they still my Indian relatives? I also don’t understand why if you are born, raised and live in Egypt which is IN AFRICA why some Egyptians are not welcoming themselves as Africans? Why are South Africans not wanting to claim the title of AFRICANS either? What’s up with that? Africa is an amazing continent!! Why do people just assume that if you’re black or brown skinned in America you must be African American? I know blacks and browns originally from India, Australia, the KSA, Panama, Holland, France, England and other countries who have no lineage to Africa so why do people lump them all as African American in the USA? It makes them very mad and I don’t blame them! If I’m a Canadian or Mexican am I not a North American too? So is all this about skin color, ethnicity or national origin? LABELS, labels, labels. I’m happy to at least see the category of MIXED race if you just have to declare! Perhaps we should have one for Human because most times I know I’m probably Alien! Would that get me to the head of the line? :) **By the way this is NOT meant to spark a friendly feud, just my thoughts wandering around. Peace!

I actually disagree about The U.S. government doing things always the right way… unless you’re being cynical. At any rate, I thought your previous poll was more specific. This new poll categorizes me as either white or other( what in the world is ‘other” and i find it slightly offensive to be frank) As a new immigrant I had to tick forms and forms of the above always trying to find my race and always failing. I tick white even though I don’t consider myself white( I am Egyptian) so middle eastern or Mediterranean would work I guess. My skin color is pretty fair but since I am not American or European ( I have fairer skin than both) I am not white ( I understand white is not about your skin tone) Anyhoo that’s a lot than I intended to say. ( why are you having the polls anyway?)
    Peace

“Man in the early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what I’m wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilization that man has achieved, and is not regressive. It’s the removal of clothes again that is regressive back to ancient times” - Nobel laureate, Tawakul Karman, in response to journalists who said her hijab was not proportionate with her level of intellect and education.
