Dooce, Me, Dr. Phil. I Was on Set, and it Was Awesome.

Last week, Heather Armstrong from Dooce.com blogged about being on The Dr. Phil Show to take part in the most controversial mom conversation IN THE WORLD: Should moms stay at home after they have children, or should they go back to work? Since I’m in L.A., and I read her blog, I decided to go to the taping — I was also hoping I’d get to meet her after the show.
I e-mailed the producers for the show Monday morning, and I got a call later that afternoon confirming my spot. I got to the Paramount Studios around 7:45 a.m., and they opened the doors around 8 a.m. After we took our seats, they started playing Cher really loud, and all the producers told us to get up and dance, and I was all, Dudes, I haven’t danced to Cher since I was like 8, which was around the same time that I used to choreograph songs with my sister and our girlfriends to Ace of Base. We all got up and did that awkward Sway-and-Clap thing anyway, and then the Dr. Phil music started, the doors slid open, and TA-DA! there, right before my eyes, was Dr. Phil.
I was sitting like three feet away from Robin, Dr. Phil’s wife, and during a commercial break I was all, “PSST! Robin! I like your shirt!” and she gave me a huge smile, and was like, “Thank you, thank you so much!” The whole thing was just so funny. But the funniest thing was that I don’t even watch Dr. Phil. But there I was this morning, sitting next to Robin, seven inches from the teleprompter, 11 feet from Dr. Phil, and staring at the back of Dooce’s head.
Doocers didn’t get much airtime, but after the show, she walked right by me, and then a group of Dooce readers I met on the set went downstairs to wait for her. I assume she must have been feeding her 10-week-old baby because she dissappeared for what seemed like forever, and then the next thing you know, all the people I was standing with left me for the snacks and juice boxs that the producers were handing out to audience members. I hung around by myself for about 20 more minutes, but when I didn’t see her, I figured she was already at LAX headed back to Utah so then I left too.
You see, Heather? If you ever read my blog, know that I DIDN’T LEAVE YOU FOR A KUDOS BAR!
Even though I didn’t meet the Celebrity Mommy Blogger, the convo amongst the women was awesome. Since it was all about whether or not moms should work or stay home, there were a lot of passionate people in the audience — and when there’s a debate, there’s always at least one crazy that has to join the panel. The producers said they weren’t sure when the show is scheduled to air, but even if you’re not a mom, the discussion is always so very interesting to be a part of.

i’m so incredibly jealous!
Great post! That pretty much sums it up. I need to work on my post tomorrow. I was one of the cranky working moms who stood up and begged to talk.
I love her site too. Must have been awesome!
Cool, I could feel your excitement.
hahaha..i saw the title and was thinking “she doesn’t watch dr. phil..huh?”
then i thought, it’s a harpo production right? she’s trying to take over oprah from the inside. i’m glad you had a better reason than what my lil brain could think up.
that’s totally awesome. so will i be able to see you on tv?!
Hey Jen! I don’t know, but that would be fun! I just hope they don’t show me boogieing out to Cher!
