A walk along the pier

My favorite thing about driving to the beach is when you get to that point where you can’t see anything beyond the horizon. That’s when you know that the ocean is near.

That’s when you roll down your windows and you can actually smell the salt water in the air.
It’s times like these that I miss my college days in Virginia Beach.

Taking in deep breaths of that smell filled with sand and sea water makes you feel completely uninhibited, and totally free.

The scenery feels so welcoming here.
It’s as if these flowers trumpet everyone’s arrival as people come close to admire their beauty.

The sound of tap dancing made by the little crabs walking along the rocks made me smile.
And it also made me wonder what they do all day.

Maybe they wish they were bigger so they couldn’t be bullied.
Or maybe they plan and plot on how to avoid being eaten.
I think these guys are too little to eat anyway.

But these guys aren’t.
And it’s only a matter of time before they’ll be in someone’s tummy.
I guess it’s not so bad being small after all.

The pier was bustling with dozens of people.
The weather out here is too nice to stay indoors.

I love to see people having a good time with their friends and families, but you have to admit that this looks like a scene straight out of “Jaws.”
Can you hear that music in your head?

DA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA.

Or if you prefer –

DU DU DU DU DU DU DU DU DU.

I find them both to be equally scary.

The Boss and his family used to fish in the summers, so we stopped at the pier for a few minutes to watch the fishermen throw out their lines, and wait for a bite.

The Boss was intrigued by how close the fishermen were standing to one another. He couldn’t understand how their lines weren’t getting tangled, especially with the tide picking up, and a breeze by the water.

But I was more intrigued by this guy who couldn’t seem to get his bait on the hook.

I walked further down the pier to a quieter spot and watched as he patiently tried again and again, but that little fish wouldn’t stop wiggling around.

fish-4

I moved in a little closer, and turns out it wasn’t a real fish after all. It was actually a rubber toy.

Eventually his friend turned around to ask him if he needed any help, and to tell him that I was taking pictures of him.

run

And that was pretty embarrassing, so I ran away.
And then I accidently took this picture as I was trying to hide my camera.

You just took me away there for a minute …from the office, the deadlines, the audits, the managers – Shukran.

Hi Breathe. Yup, that’s me on the right, and The Boss’s sandal on the left. I’m wearing a dress by tea bags that I got from a store called Cusp (www.Cusp.com) when I was still on the east coast. I got the dress over a year ago, and go figure, about a week ago, The Boss saw another girl wearing the exact same one out here in L.A.!

I used to live in San Francisco, and long for the ocean air still. After reading this, I can somehow smell the ocean here in my stuffy inland valley. Thank you!
