I like Weed(s)

While visiting my grandmother this weekend, I stepped outside for some sun, and saw this little piece of grass growing right between the wood panels of my aunt’s deck.
He found his way right through the cracks, as if to announce to the world, “Look at me, I’m beautiful.”
I know, it’s just a weed — an undesired piece of vegetation that would have likely gone unnoticed had I been sitting on the couch watching TV, or on my laptop checking my e-mail.
Maybe someone would have stepped outside and seen the little guy’s head peeking at the world around him only to find him out of place and bothersome.
Maybe they would have grabbed hold of his body, and ripped him from the earth.
After all, what business does he have joining us by the lounge chairs and deck swing?
I know that no one wants him around, but how can something that’s so beautiful, in its own right, be bothersome?
How can something that worked so hard to find its way through the cracks go unnoticed?
I kneeled to take his picture, and he stretched his body in the wind to make sure I got his good side…
And then I ripped him from the earth to see if I could smoke him.
Apparently it wasn’t that kind of weed.
