I don’t get it

I have lots of blonde friends — most of whom are naturally blonde — and none of them are dumb. In fact, they are some of the smartest people I know. I’m not sure how the whole Dumb Blonde Joke thing got started, but yesterday while I was flipping through the Harper’s Bazaar that gets mailed to The Boss every month (we’re not sure either) I found this ad for John Frieda.
I’ve decided to blame the Hair Guru for the years of Blonde Jokes that have circulated through everyone’s e-mail at some point (I’m talking to you, Dad!) and have been a part of our culture for generations.

blonde ad

Inside every blonde is a blonder blonde waiting to get out.

What does that sentence mean?
I must have read it 100 times, and two days later, I still can’t stop thinking about it.
I know some of you are thinking, Ah Ha! They got you! Their marketing team is so savvy, they’ve created an ad that you couldn’t stop thinking about — Point, Marketing Team.

Maybe.

But the ad…it just sounds so…dumb.
I feel like it makes blonde women look so shallow. Like, really? Is that all blonde women think about? The blonder blonde inside of them that just can wait to come out?

I feel the need to disagree.

I’m not some Super Feminist who’s going to be all, “Oh, they should have made the girl in this ad a doctor,” because it’s an ad for shampoo. But I mean, I can think of a million like three better formatted sentences that would totally make people want to buy this stuff.

What do you think, Readers? Do you agree of disagree? Is it just an ad, or is it an insult to all my smart blonde friends?

I don’t know what it means either, but I think its an insult to blondes everywhere.

maybe they were just being ‘funny’ without knowing that they actually are being rude.

Hmmm not sure if it’s an insult or a joke.. but as a consumer it makes me wish I was a blonde haha… she looks like she’s having fun! :)

I get the ad, but I practically work for the advertising industry, and if you need an insider to get it, then it’s not working.
I don’t think it’s meant to be insulting at all – after all, blondes are the ones buying this product, it’d do no good to insult them regardless of their real level of intelligence. I think they’re trying to bring out the “fun” connotations of being blonde, being proud to be blonde, and taking care of your blonde hair – a symbol of your identity. The last part could be a bit insulting, depending on how you look at it.
Maybe it takes a blonde to understand a blonder blonde line.

I’m blond so I get this one. Think Marilyn Monroe, Pam Anderson, Anna Nicole Smith. These women are all platinum blonds. So what it’s saying to blond women is the blonder the better.
