My Friends Buy Me Really Cool Things

My friend Lindsay is one of those people who doesn’t need an occasion to buy you a gift. She’s always collecting things that remind her of others, which means a visit with her is like celebrating your birthday/whatever holiday you celebrate, all the time.

We hadn’t seen each other since December (and missed each other on her birthday) so when we met up for lunch last month, I took her belated birthday gifts with me. As I handed over her gifts, she handed me a bag of goodies for her usual reason — no reason at all.

And everything inside was glorious!

First, how adorable is this bag?  I used to have two frogs, but they both died.
Anyone want to take a stab at what their names were?

Goodies, goodies and more goodies!

What a beautiful color.
And a very thoughtful reminder.

notebook2

This notebook is by ecojot. I’ve browsed their Web site more a few times and I love, love, love their designs and eco-friendly products — but I’ve never bought myself anything from their collection. When I pulled this out of the bag, I felt a little flutter in my chest. It was love at first sight.
A strong, beautiful notebook is the most brilliant gift you could give a writer.

But the brilliance didn’t stop there, My Friends.
Then came these.

orla kiely mugs

These mugs are by Orla Kiely, whose simple, youthful and elegant designs have taken the world by storm over the last decade. I don’t know too many Americans who knew about her designs before 2001, but I’m pretty sure my British cousins have known about her for a while. I think I was introduced to her stuff a few years ago by a woman who told me she picked up some of Orla’s stationary at a specialty store. This year, Orla Kiely teamed up with Target for a limited time, and I was lucky enough to be the one that Lindsay thought of when she saw these adorable mugs.

blog book

Lindsay had planned on buying this for herself when she launched her own site, but instead she got it for me while her Internet brain child is still hibernating inside its virtual placenta.

“No One Cares What You Had for Lunch,” written by Margaret Mason of Mighty Girl, is an easy and fun read all about ways to make your blog better. This book could have been filled with examples from the author’s blog, which would have gotten really boring, really fast, but it’s not that at all. Mason does a good job of citing other bloggers that have done something creative or inspiring, and she’s complied all of that into a long list of ways to really connect with your readers.

    Very cool stuff!

I remember Maximus and his funeral by the tree, behind Gum Hall, at the traffic circle.

And the snail trying to eat him before we could get to him.

“Man in the early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what I’m wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilization that man has achieved, and is not regressive. It’s the removal of clothes again that is regressive back to ancient times” - Nobel laureate, Tawakul Karman, in response to journalists who said her hijab was not proportionate with her level of intellect and education.
