Supporting your family isn’t always easy

If you’ve ever vacationed in the Caribbean islands, you know how beautiful it is there. But if you wander away from the fancy resorts and million-dollar cruise ships, you’ll come face-to-face with the reality that poverty is rampant on these tiny islands.
My sister used to go to school in Dominica, where of the 70,000 people that live on the island, 23 percent are unemployed, according to the CIA World Factbook. As we walked down the streets of Roseau, the capital city, I saw this man who appeared to have fallen asleep during the middle of his workday. I thought this photo was so telling of how hard some of the locals work. I’m blessed to not know what it feels like to work outside in that kind of heat, but he seems to have made the best of his situation. A shady spot, cool concrete steps, and a little shut eye seem like a really appropriate way to enjoy your lunch break.

Let me find out you met Greg Oden in Dominica.
The thing with the Caribbean is that poverty is rampant, but it’s not as hard as poverty in a developed country. Everyone shares and you can still have food to eat… plus paradise is so close by… the many rivers, waters and beaches to numb whatever disappointments and hard-ups you might have. Not like poverty in a developement country, where your views are diminished to concrete and dull scenaries.
You can tell I’m missing the Caribbean.
