She’s Back, For Now.

A while back, I wrote a letter to my grandmother who had been living in a nursing home for the past two and a half years.
About a week ago, we got the wonderful news that one of my aunts took my grandmother out of the nursing home and moved her into my aunt’s place about two hours from where I live.

When my grandmother moved into her daughter’s place last Friday, she was doing really well. But by Sunday my aunt called and said things were not looking good at all. My grandmother basically went from being in a total euphoric state to having no desire to live. I had planned on visiting a few days after she moved in with my aunt, but last Sunday when I heard that her general health had significantly declined, I threw some clothes and a toothbrush into an overnight bag and hit the road.

Since I arrived last weekend, my grandmother has been a totally different person from day-to-day — some days she sleeps for nearly 22 hours, and today — well, she’s been singing.

I’ve been here for about six days now and will probably head home in the next day or two.
Posting will be light here over the weekend, while my family starts to better understand what my grandmother’s needs are and starts to plan for the inevitable.

“Man in the early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what I’m wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilization that man has achieved, and is not regressive. It’s the removal of clothes again that is regressive back to ancient times” - Nobel laureate, Tawakul Karman, in response to journalists who said her hijab was not proportionate with her level of intellect and education.
