‘Design-Her Gals’ Inclusive of All

A few years ago, a friend of mine introduced me to Design-her gals, a site which lets you design your own “gal” and make all sorts of fun things with her picture on it — stationary, aprons, mugs, etc.

At the time, I thought it was a great gift idea, but it wasn’t until about a year later that I had the genius idea of writing to the company requesting that they design a hijab so Muslim women (that wear hijab) could also make their own personalized items.

I exchanged a few e-mails with the designers, and they asked that I send them a few pictures of women in hijab. I sent a handful of photos of me and my family/friends, and within weeks, the folks over at Design Her Gals created a hijab as an accessory for the gals!

I made these flat note cards moments after the hijab went up on their site.

The design team over at Design her Gals obviously has an eye for detail, because after looking at my pictures, they came up with a hijab with gold hoop earrings attached to it! I laughed so hard I nearly fell off my chair at work — they literally made the hijab for me!

I wrote them back right away thanking them for their efforts. I also requested that they design a second hijab, minus the earrings, explaining to them that not all Muslim women wear jewelry with their scarves. And once again, their design team came through, almost immediately making a second hijab — sans earrings.

Currently, they have five color choices for the hijab with earrings and without.

Naturally, when I ordered these flat note cards, I made “myself” with the earrings.
Check out my closeup!

They have a ton of different clothing choices for the gals, and they even have have guys and kids if you decide to make a To-Do List with your whole family on it.

Some of the outfits are already put together, and some you can mix and match. When I made my stationary, I was obsessively wearing a trench coat to work that I had recently bought, so this outfit was perfect for me.

I have designed a number of these stationary sets for people (both Muslim and non) as gifts, and they’re so unique everyone loves them. If you design something for yourself or a pal, expect to spend somewhere around $50 (well, on the stationary anyway,) but they are constantly having sales, so keep your eyes open for a good deal.
If you think $50 is too much for stationary, keep in mind that a portion of the proceeds from each sale benefits the Gal to Gal Foundation, which is dedicated to women who are fighting Stage Four Breast Cancer.

Once you create an account on the site and start designing your gal, you have to pick the gal type, hair, eye and skin color, and hair style before you can get to the “fun stuff” category. Once you get there, the hijabs are under the category called “hats,” and the hijab will replace whatever hair color/style you chose previously.

These are super fun gifts, but let me tell you, designing your person at work is NOT A GOOD IDEA.
You’re productivity will significantly decrease, and when your boos asks you to hand in the project you were supposed to be working on (but instead spent the last five hours designing your gal) you won’t know what to do, so you might panic, and resort to acting like you don’t feel well. Soon after, you might find yourself aimlessly wandering around in the women’s bathroom while making loud groaning sounds — hoping that when you emerge, your shenanigans were convincing enough for your boss to think you have Ebola and send you home.

Hey, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

They don’t have the hijabs on the site, right now. I’ve contacted them asking why, but they are certainly not under hats. Such a shame since I was really looking forward to it.

Hi Molly. I just went to the site and the hijabs are there. Could it be that maybe you just scrolled past them? You have to select your gal, and then select eye color, skin tone, hair style and hair color. Once you select hair color you’ll see the option for “fun stuff” light up. (It’s grayed-out until you make the first few selections.) Click that box, and then click “hats.” The hijabs are in then 10th row from the top, and they are the first two choices in Row 10. The first one is purple, the one next to it is red. Good luck!

@ Molly, I see the hijab.. It’s under “fun stuff” and “hats” as Sabrina said… I wonder why you can’t find it.. :-/

Anyway, this is adorable! I love it!

    Oh my! Too cute!!!!
    Looks just like you!!!
    Do they have pleasantly-plump redhead?
I may just have to search that out.

The hijab was only available for the “super sickly skinny gal” and “slighty ’rounder’ gal” and not for the “sassy plus-sized gal.”

But I wrote to them and they changed it!

I’ve also suggested long skirts and being able to put dresses over pants. They’re working on it, they said.

    They’re good people.

    Hi Sabrina!
Your website is awesome. I just stumbled across it today while looking for Hijaab styles. Anyways, this is such a cute idea. I was wondering, where did you find the coat on the Design her gal website? I really like that coat and want it!! :D Thanks in advance.

Hi TX. I just browsed their site, and I can’t find it either:( It was under “tops” when I made my cards, but I also made me cards more than two years ago. You can always shoot them an e-mail and ask if they have a similar trench for your gal. They’re really good at responding to customer requests, so who knows — they might make one just for you!

    Hey Slice,

Thanks for replying so quickly! I think I will email them. I really just needed something modest, and the longest shirt I found has 3/4 length sleeves.. so I don’t know. But, thanks again for your prompt reply and help :D

“Man in the early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what I’m wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilization that man has achieved, and is not regressive. It’s the removal of clothes again that is regressive back to ancient times” - Nobel laureate, Tawakul Karman, in response to journalists who said her hijab was not proportionate with her level of intellect and education.
