Ring. Cough. Click. What Genius!

When I was 9 years old, my neighbor and I made a prank call to 9-1-1.
We made a few prank calls to 9-1-1.
Like about six. In one day. When we were bored.
I know, you’re probably thinking, why on earth would you do that?
Well, I just said, we were bored.

We took turns calling the emergency line, and when the operator picked up, we would cough and hang up.
Yes, that was the plan. Just cough and hang up.

At 9, I thought I was the smartest kid in the world. As I did at 10, 11, 12 and so on, but at 9, I was so smart that I didn’t know 9-1-1 had caller ID.

When I realized the emergency dispatchers were calling back, I picked up the phone and quickly hung up because my parents were in their bedroom upstairs. (If I had been really smart I would have opted to call on a Monday when they were at work — not on a Saturday while everyone was home.)

Each time I hung up the phone those damn operators, who took their job so seriously that they wanted to make sure I was okay, kept calling back.
I started to panic and decided to run next door to tell my neighbor that 9-1-1 is calling my house now!
I hung up the phone and ran outside.
I got just past the front steps when I stopped dead in my tracks.
What if they called while I was outside? My parents would pick up.
I ran back in the house to take the phone off the hook, and just as I made it to the phone in the kitchen, I heard my dad yell my name.
Oh crap.

I lied to my parents when confronted and of course they didn’t buy it.
Needless to say I got in trouble and was grounded from using the phone.
But I maintained my innocence even years after the incident.

But now, I’m finally ready to come clean.
Mom, Dad, it was me.
And I just needed to get it off my chest.

“Man in the early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what I’m wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilization that man has achieved, and is not regressive. It’s the removal of clothes again that is regressive back to ancient times” - Nobel laureate, Tawakul Karman, in response to journalists who said her hijab was not proportionate with her level of intellect and education.
